Best cybersecurity labs and practice platforms 2026 — HackTheBox, TryHackMe, LearnToExploit, PortSwigger Academy and PentesterLab compared

Best cybersecurity labs and practice platforms in 2026, at a glance

There’s a saying we repeat to every batch of students: “You don’t learn cybersecurity by reading about cybersecurity.” Certificates get your resume past filters, but it’s lab practice that makes you dangerous in an interview and useful on the job. The difference between a candidate who reads about SQL injection and one who’s exploited it across forty different applications? The second one gets hired.

The good news: in 2026, you don’t need to spend a fortune to get quality hands-on practice. Several of the best platforms are free, and even the paid ones are affordable by Indian standards. Here are the 10 platforms we recommend to our students — whether you’re just starting out, preparing for OSCP, or building specialised skills in areas like AI security or digital forensics.

# Platform Best for Cost (INR, approx.) Standout feature
1 HackTheBox OSCP prep, offensive labs Free tier + ₹1,200/mo VIP Active and retired machines, Pro Labs, competitive
2 TryHackMe Absolute beginners Free tier + ₹800/mo premium Guided learning paths, no setup needed
3 LearnToExploit AI security, Indian pricing ₹10,000 (Specialist tier) Browser labs, ₹-priced, AI red teaming track
4 PortSwigger Web Security Academy Web AppSec, Burp Suite Free Best free web vulnerability labs anywhere
5 PentesterLab White-box web exploitation ~₹2,500/mo PRO Source code + exploitation, progressive difficulty
6 CyberDefenders Blue team, DFIR Free + premium Forensics and incident response challenges
7 Altered Security Labs Active Directory Included with CRTP/CRTE Realistic multi-forest AD environments
8 OffSec Proving Grounds OSCP exam prep ~₹1,700/mo Practice+ OSCP-style machines, from the exam creators
9 VulnHub Offline practice Free (download VMs) Run locally, no internet needed
10 PicoCTF / CTFtime CTF competition training Free Jeopardy-style challenges across all categories

1. HackTheBox — where pentesters sharpen their edge

If you’re serious about offensive security, you’ve probably already heard of HackTheBox. It’s the go-to platform for practising the kind of challenges you’ll face in OSCP, real-world pentests, and job interviews. Active machines rotate weekly, retired machines are available to VIP subscribers, and Pro Labs like Dante, Offshore, and RastaLabs simulate realistic enterprise networks with Active Directory, pivoting, and multi-machine attack chains.

We typically tell our OSCP students to solve 40–60 HTB retired machines sorted by OSCP-like difficulty before their exam. It’s the closest you’ll get to the real exam experience outside of OffSec’s own Proving Grounds.

Cost: free tier for active machines. VIP (~₹1,200/month) unlocks retired machines and writeups. Pro Labs cost extra. Best for: intermediate to advanced offensive practice, OSCP prep. See our pentesting tools guide for the tooling these labs expect.

2. TryHackMe — the best place for your first steps

If you’re completely new to cybersecurity, TryHackMe is where you should start — no debate. The guided rooms walk you through concepts step by step, and learning paths (Pre-Security, Introduction to Cyber Security, Complete Beginner, SOC Level 1) give you a structured roadmap from “what’s a port?” to “I can triage a real SOC alert.” The browser-based AttackBox means you don’t even need to install anything locally.

That said, don’t stay here forever. Once you’re completing rooms without looking at hints, it’s time to graduate to HackTheBox for unguided challenges that force you to think independently.

Cost: substantial free tier. Premium (~₹800/month) unlocks all rooms and the AttackBox. Best for: complete beginners, your first 3–6 months in cybersecurity.

3. LearnToExploit — AI security labs priced for Indian students

We built LearnToExploit because we saw our students struggling with two things: most AI security training was theoretical, and everything practical was priced in USD. The Model Attack & Red Teaming track — twelve modules, nine browser-based labs — covers prompt injection, RAG exploitation, agent abuse, guardrail evasion, and data exfiltration from LLM applications. Everything runs in your browser. Everything is priced in rupees.

Cost: ₹10,000 one-time for the Specialist tier. Best for: AI/LLM security hands-on practice, OSAI preparation. Read our course guide and AI pentesting certifications guide.

4. PortSwigger Web Security Academy — free and world-class

This is genuinely the best free cybersecurity resource on the internet. PortSwigger’s Web Security Academy covers every major web vulnerability class — SQL injection, XSS, CSRF, SSRF, SSTI, authentication bypass, access control, deserialization, file upload, HTTP request smuggling — with clear explanations followed by progressively harder hands-on labs. If you test web applications for a living (or plan to), you should complete every lab here. No excuses — it’s free.

Cost: completely free. Best for: web AppSec fundamentals, OSWE preparation, anyone who touches web applications. Pair with our Burp Suite beginner guide and API security testing guide.

5. PentesterLab — learn to exploit from source code

PentesterLab does something most platforms don’t — it gives you the source code and asks you to find and exploit the vulnerability yourself. This is white-box web pentesting, and it’s exactly the skill set OSWE tests. Progressive exercises take you from basic injection through to complex deserialization chains, JWT attacks, and OAuth flaws.

Cost: ~₹2,500/month PRO. Best for: web exploitation depth, OSWE preparation, building source-code review skills.

6. CyberDefenders — blue team practice done right

Offensive gets all the attention, but if your career path is SOC, incident response, or DFIR, you need CyberDefenders. Challenges cover network forensics, memory forensics, malware triage, log analysis, and incident investigation — the actual work SOC L2 analysts do daily. If you’re preparing for SOC-200, GCIH, or CHFI, this is where you practise the investigation skills those exams test.

Cost: free for most challenges, premium for advanced content. Best for: SOC analysts, incident responders, DFIR careers. Pair with our SOC analyst training guide and DFIR certifications guide.

7. Altered Security Labs — the AD attack playground

If Active Directory pentesting is your focus, Altered Security’s lab environments (bundled with CRTP and CRTE) are the most realistic AD attack labs you can get at this price. Multi-forest environments with trust relationships, delegation misconfigurations, and certificate abuse opportunities. They’re laser-focused on one thing, and they do it exceptionally well.

Cost: included with CRTP (₹24,100) or CRTE. Best for: AD pentesting, red team preparation. See our AD pentest guide and AD attack cheatsheet.

8. OffSec Proving Grounds — straight from the exam makers

Proving Grounds is OffSec’s own practice platform, which gives it a unique advantage: the machines come from the same organisation that writes the OSCP exam. PG Play machines are beginner-friendly, PG Practice machines are exam-relevant. If you’re in the final weeks of OSCP preparation, supplementing your PEN-200 lab time with PG Practice+ is probably the highest-ROI thing you can do.

Cost: ~₹1,700/month for Practice+. Best for: final OSCP exam preparation. Read our OSCP guide for the complete study plan.

9. VulnHub — practice offline, for free

VulnHub hosts downloadable vulnerable VMs you run on your own hardware. No subscription, no internet requirement, no time limits. Quality varies — some VMs are excellent OSCP practice, others are puzzle-heavy CTF boxes — but the price is right (free), and they’re invaluable when you want to practise without relying on internet connectivity or paying for a subscription.

Cost: free. Best for: offline practice, budget-constrained learners, supplementary machines when you’ve exhausted other platforms.

10. PicoCTF and CTFtime — competitive problem-solving

CTF platforms offer jeopardy-style challenges across web, binary exploitation, reverse engineering, cryptography, forensics, and OSINT. PicoCTF is beginner-friendly and always available. CTFtime.org aggregates live competitions worldwide. CTFs build the kind of fast, creative problem-solving that structured courses sometimes miss — and many Indian companies now use CTF-style challenges in their hiring process.

Cost: free. Best for: building breadth across categories, competition experience, interview preparation.

Which platform should you start with?

Frequently asked questions

Are free labs enough to get a cybersecurity job in India?

Honestly? Yes — if you document your work properly. Complete TryHackMe rooms, PortSwigger labs, and VulnHub machines with proper writeups, and you’ll have a portfolio that proves practical ability more convincingly than a stack of MCQ certificates. Employers want to see that you can do things, not just answer questions about them.

How many machines should I solve before attempting OSCP?

We recommend 40–60 machines across HackTheBox, Proving Grounds, and VulnHub, concentrating on Easy to Medium (OSCP-like) difficulty. But the number matters less than the consistency — the real benchmark is whether you can pick up a fresh machine and go from enumeration to root within 2–3 hours without external hints. When you can do that consistently, you’re ready.

Can I use these labs on a basic laptop?

Browser-based platforms like TryHackMe (with AttackBox), LearnToExploit, and PortSwigger work on any laptop with a modern browser — even a Chromebook. VPN-based platforms like HackTheBox and Proving Grounds need a machine that can run Kali Linux: 8 GB RAM minimum, 16 GB recommended. For hardware recommendations, see our best laptops for cybersecurity students guide.
