GIAC certification cost in India 2026, at a glance
GIAC certifications have a reputation: highly respected, deeply technical, and eye-wateringly expensive. If you’ve ever priced a SANS course in rupees, you know the feeling. But here’s something a lot of people in India don’t realise: you don’t have to buy the SANS course to sit a GIAC exam. That one fact changes the maths completely.
So let’s break it down properly: what the exam alone costs, what the full SANS route costs, the fees nobody mentions upfront, and which GIAC certifications are actually worth the money for an Indian career.
| GIAC exam attempt (exam only) | US$999 (about ₹97,000) |
| SANS course + GIAC attempt | About US$8,780 + US$999 (roughly ₹9.5 lakh) |
| Retake | US$899 (about ₹87,200) |
| Attempt extension | US$479 (about ₹46,500) |
| Renewal (every 4 years) | US$499 (about ₹48,400); US$249 for additional certs renewed together |
| Applied Knowledge certifications | US$1,299 (about ₹1,26,000) |
| Missed proctored appointment | US$175 reseating fee (about ₹17,000) |
The good news: every GIAC practitioner exam costs the same
Unlike most certification bodies, GIAC doesn’t charge more for its “harder” certifications. A standard attempt is US$999 whether you’re sitting GSEC or GREM. Here are the GIAC certifications we get asked about most, and the SANS course each one maps to:
| GIAC certification | What it covers | Matching SANS course | Exam attempt (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| GSEC | Security essentials, a broad foundation | SEC401 | ~₹97,000 |
| GCIH | Incident handling and attacker techniques | SEC504 | ~₹97,000 |
| GCFA | Advanced forensics and threat hunting | FOR508 | ~₹97,000 |
| GCFE | Windows forensic examination | FOR500 | ~₹97,000 |
| GPEN | Network penetration testing | SEC560 | ~₹97,000 |
| GWAPT | Web application penetration testing | SEC542 | ~₹97,000 |
| GCIA | Intrusion detection and network analysis | SEC503 | ~₹97,000 |
| GREM | Reverse engineering malware | FOR610 | ~₹97,000 |
Two of those, GCFA and GCIH, are the ones Indian professionals search for most, and for good reason: they’re the GIAC certifications global SOC and DFIR teams list most often in job descriptions.
Route 1 vs route 2: exam-only or the full SANS bundle?
Route 1: exam only (about ₹97,000). You buy a GIAC certification attempt directly and prepare on your own. GIAC exams are open book, so experienced candidates build their own indexed notes from books, documentation and hands-on practice. This is the route most Indian professionals actually take when they’re paying out of pocket.
Route 2: SANS course + attempt (roughly ₹9.5 lakh). SANS lists its long courses at around US$8,780, plus US$999 for the bundled GIAC attempt. You get world-class instructors, the official books (which make the open-book exam far easier) and practice tests. It’s superb training, but at that price it’s almost always funded by an employer.
Honestly? If your company will pay for SANS, take it, no question. If you’re self-funding, the exam-only route plus disciplined self-study is the realistic option, and it’s a perfectly respectable way to earn the same certificate.
The costs nobody mentions upfront
GST and exchange rates. GIAC prices exclude tax, and Indian buyers paying a foreign provider may see GST added, plus your bank’s foreign-exchange markup. Budget a few thousand rupees extra.
Retakes aren’t cheap. At US$899 (about ₹87,200), a retake costs almost as much as the first attempt. It pays to prepare properly the first time.
Renewal every four years. GIAC certifications are valid for four years. Renewing costs US$499 (about ₹48,400), and you’ll also need continuing education credits. If you hold several GIAC certifications, additional renewals within the same window drop to US$249 each.
Missed appointments. Miss your proctored exam slot and GIAC charges a US$175 reseating fee. Put the date in your calendar twice.
Is a GIAC certification worth it in India?
For the right role, yes. GIAC certifications carry real weight with multinational security teams, global capability centres (GCCs) in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai, and consulting firms that serve overseas clients. GCIH and GCFA in particular signal serious incident response and forensics ability.
But be realistic about the price tag. For many Indian SOC and DFIR roles, cheaper certifications open the same first doors. We compared GCIH head-to-head with its EC-Council equivalent in our ECIH vs GCIH guide, and mapped the wider forensics landscape in our DFIR certifications guide.
Our rule of thumb: go for GIAC when an employer is paying, when you’re targeting a global team that specifically asks for it, or when you’re already mid-career and want the most respected name in blue-team certification. If you’re just starting out, build your foundation first and let GIAC be your second or third certification.
How Indian candidates can cut the cost
Ask your employer first. Many MNCs and GCCs have training budgets that cover SANS or GIAC. It’s worth a direct conversation with your manager.
Go exam-only if you’re experienced. If you already work in the domain, self-study plus a single attempt is by far the cheapest way to the certificate.
Look at scholarships and programmes. SANS and other organisations run cyber academies and scholarship schemes from time to time. We keep an eye on these in our cybersecurity scholarships guide.
Prepare to pass first time. With retakes at around ₹87,000, good preparation is the biggest saving of all.

Choose the GIAC route that fits your budget
GIAC is one of the most respected names in security, but the right route depends entirely on who’s paying. If your employer covers it, the SANS bundle is excellent. If you’re self-funding, the exam-only route at about ₹97,000 is the smart play. Either way, make sure the certification matches the role you want.
